Adam Peaty: I have been in a downward spiral.
In pursuit of greater Olympic glory, Adam Peaty acknowledges that he has been in a "self-destructive spiral," but he believes he is emerging from it.
The 28-year-old withdrew from the British Championships
earlier this month owing to mental health issues. She has almost ten years of
experience competing in sprint breaststroke events.
Peaty has already spoken about his battles with depression and
drinking, which, according to him, got worse last year as a result of his
injuries, lack of ambition, and deteriorating ties with the mother of his small
kid.
My biggest love in the sport—racing—and swimming didn't make
me happy. I've had my finger poised over a self-destruct button because I
self-destruct if I don't get what I want.
At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Peaty successfully defended
his 100-meter breaststroke championship after earlier that year setting the
record for the fastest 20 times in history.
As some of you may be aware, I've experienced mental health
issues recently, and I believe it's vital to be open about it. I don't feel like
myself, I'm exhausted, and I'm not as into the sport as I have been for the
past ten years.
Adam Peaty celebrates winning his second 100-meter breaststroke Olympic gold medal.
Any loss for Peaty, like the one at the Commonwealth Games
last summer after he recovered from a foot ailment, is a tremendous shock since
he holds a world record that is about a full second faster than anyone else has
ever swum.
The constant quest for perfection has taken a toll, but
Peaty claims he still intends to compete for a third straight 100-meter
championship in Paris the following summer.
Once made sense, twice was a large ask, and the last time
was even more difficult for all of us due to the additional Covid year.
